What is Assessment?
Assessment Definition Assessment is the ongoing process of: Establishing clear, measurable expected outcomes of student learning Ensuring that students have sufficient opportunities to achieve those outcomes Systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well student learning matches our expectations Using the resulting information to understand improve student learning (Suskie and Banta, 2009).
Diagnostic Assessment Occurs before instruction begins Determines student’s current skills or understanding Identifies strengths and weakness or areas of need
Objective Assessment Requires no professional judgment to score accurately Examples: Multiple choice, true and false exams Believed to be reliable and fair by many (Indiana University, 2002).
Subjective Assessment Requires professional judgment in scoring Examples: Portfolios, Project Based Learning, Demonstrations/ Presentations Using rubrics increases credibility
