Assembly and Finishing Tools
Assembly Tools • Include • • • Spanners Sockets screwdrivers universal bits riveter
Spanners and Sockets • These tools are used to tighten and loosen nuts and bolts • Bolts are used to join pieces together either permanently or temporarily. Many steel structures, including buildings, are simply bolted together
Screwdrivers • Are used to insert screws to join 2 materials • Have different head types • Always use the screwdriver that corresponds to the head of the screw being used
Universal Bits • These are used in conjunction with a power drill or pillar drill to drill appropriate size holes in various materials • Can also be used to drive screws into material
Riveter • Riveting is commonly used to join Aluminum Alloys because these don’t solder very well • It gives a very neat finish while still providing the necessary strength of join

Finishing Tools
Finishing Tools • Include • • • Spray gun Sander Buffer File Paint brush
Spray gun • A painting tool using compressed air from a nozzle to paint large areas with a uniform coat of paint
Sanding Machines • There are various types of sanders such as the rotary sander and belt sander below • These are used to give a smooth finish to wood or plastic being used
Sanding Machines § Orbital - the whole sanding plate moves in a small circle causing each grain of abrasive to move likewise. § Belt - this gives sanding in one direction so any scratch marks will be along the direction of the belt. § Rotary - where the whole sanding disc goes round - the outer edge moves faster than the centre so the surface is subjected to varying degrees of sanding.
Files are also used to give a smooth finish to different materials
Buffer • Polishing and buffing are finishing processes for smoothing a workpiece's surface
Paint Brush • Used to apply a coat of paint, stain or varnish on finished pieces
