PROGRESS RECORDED 2006 - 2012 RPHCs 2012 - 2015 CRVS 2016 Economic Statistics 2006 - 2012: 2010 Round Population and Housing Censuses 50 out of 54 African countries undertook their censuses • 2012 - 2015 - CRVS Round: Implementation of the Africa Programme on the Accelerated Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics(APAICRVS) programme since its inception in 2010 • 2015 onwards- Focus on Economic Statistics Parallel to that accelerating programmes on 2020 RPHC and APAICRVS

New Dimensions • Enhanced for data for urgent and instant decision-making • Advanced users raising critical questions • Governance, gender, culture, sustainability • Enter Policy: Conferences of Ministers of Civil Registration • Technology: collection and dissemination of data • Global Partnerships: UN World Data Forum

ASSD Challenges • Austerity measures present funding challenges • The Secretariat should serve only to coordinate, countries continue to do their work • New multilateral bodies and structures should not make us loose the focus, the enemy is still there

Conclusion and Way forward • The ASSD continues to advocate for ownership of our destiny by African countries • Focus on 2020 RPHCs and use of technology to improve censuses • Implementation of the Africa Programme on Accelerated Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (APAICRVS) • Coordinated tapping into international best practice to improve statistical production • Economics Statistics our baby now • Africa: Agenda 2063 within the context of the Post-2015 Development Agenda w. r. t. SGDs
