SPELT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019 • • • NEED AND RATIONALE HOW IT ALL STARTED? WHY A DIY MODEL? PROGRAM FEATURES AND STRUCTURE IMPACT
LTA Leadership Development “Associations that invest in current leaders by promoting skill development and strong leadership teams stand to benefit in important ways” (Beggatta et. al p. 565). SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
LTA Leadership Development Models and Research Findings Teacher associations are different from commercially run organization mainly due to the voluntary nature and commitment of its members and leaders. However, “Leaders’ and volunteers’ work is always nested in organizational contexts that channel the amount and kinds of work individuals do. (Musick and Wilson 2008 cited in Beggata et. al, 2013) Baggetta, M. , Han, H. , and Andrews, K. T. (2013). Leading Associations: How Individual Characteristics and Team Dynamics Generate Committed Leaders. American Sociological Review 78(4) 544 – 573. SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
LTA Leadership Development Models and Research Findings “The five ELT leaders’ preference is for longitudinal experiential practice. In all cases the majority of their learning in the workplace is informal and involves a combination of learning from colleagues and learning from personal experience, often both together. (Stephenson, p. 196) SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
LTA Leadership Development Models and Research Findings Mentoring and Coaching “Mentoring programs housed within and supported by LTAs, such as the LMP, bring a series of benefits for individuals (mentors and mentees) and organizations” (Selvi, de Oliveira, and Kamhi-Stein(2018). SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
LTA Leadership Development Models and Research Findings Towards a More Systematic, Structured program Case study of a recent Past President and a recent President-Elect of TESOL International “Give structure and consistency to the mentoring sessions as you allow the process to be open and flexible. Finding that balance will take time, be patient, and listen carefully, actively, and empathetically. (Curtis and de Jong Ester, 2018, p. 350) SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
NEED AND RATIONALE Observations: 1. Emerging leaders lack essential skills such as financial management, conducting effective meetings etc. 2. Emerging leaders not fully aware of the genesis of SPELT and, therefore, its current policy and structure etc. 3. Time-constraints for learning through socialization into the culture of the organization for new members, in particular SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
NEED AND RATIONALE Mentoring/coaching model mainly used to groom future leaders (Shamim & Sarwar, 2018) Need felt for a more structured and systematic program for SPELT leadership to understand SPELT –it’s history, aims and objectives, organizational model, financial management etc. SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
How it all started? 2016 - TESOL Leadership Development Award Online certificate course Mentoring by a TESOL leader for one year Provided us with a starting point- a model and structure which we adapted to our local resources and needs SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
What’s a DIY Program? DIY Leadership Development Program SPELTers train SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
Why a DIY model for leadership development? • Resource constraints • Lots of expertise among SPELTers • Nested in the context of the organization (and the larger community in which the LTA is located) SPELT Leadership DEvelopment Program, Asia TEFL conference, 27 -29 June, 2019
