Population Patterns Migrations and conflicts have shaped the population patterns of mainland Southeast Asia. Population patterns in Island Southeast Asia have been shaped by migration and trade. The People: Mainland- § Khmer- settled in Cambodia and Vietnam, today they also live in Thailand § Mons- Centuries ago moved into Thailand Burma § Lao- are descendants from the Thai people that moved to Laos Island- § Various ethnic groups § Malays- Indigenous people of Malaysia also settled the islands of Indonesia.
Population Patterns ▪ Density and Distribution: Mainland§ Population is concentrated in fertile river valleys or on coastal plains § Vietnam has the highest population density § Laos has the lowest population density § Many people are moving to cities. Island§ Most people live in coastal plains § Singapore has the greatest population density § Many people are migrating to cities

Government and History (Island) The location of Southeast Asia’s islands has played an important role in the regions history. § Early History: § Srivijaya Empire controlled the seas in the Pacific until the 1300 s. § Indians and Muslim Arab merchants and missionaries shaped the region as well ▪ European countries colonized Southeast Asia beginning in the early 1900 s. ▪ Japanese occupation followed colonization.
Southeast Asian Culture Mainland Southeast Asia today reflects the many generations of cultures in the region. v Education: since 1945, literacy rates has increased dramatically in some parts of the sub region, and educational opportunities are improving. v. Health care- Inadequate and unevenly distributed on Mainland, Health care is much better in the islands. v. Language- On the Mainland most of the languages stem from two major language families, (Sino-Tibetan and Mon. Khmer) o there are 250 distinct languages in Indonesia
