CLASSROOM GUIDANCE LESSONS
CLASSROOM GUIDANCE LESSONS All students at SMS have access to classroom guidance lessons on a number of topics. Topics include: � Bullying prevention � Healthy self-esteem � Goal setting and future planning � Making new friends � Study skills Classroom guidance lessons are generally provided through the flex period. A calendar and rotation plan are used to provide each student on campus with the opportunity to participate in classroom guidance lessons.
ADVISOR/ADVISEE
ADVISOR/ADVISEE Advisor/Advisee is a teacher mentoring program directed in collaboration by the school counselor and administration. Students work in small groups with an assigned teacher to build positive relationships Topics, discussions, and activities are planned by the school counselor and shared with the faculty members.
NEEDS ASSESSMENTS & SURVEYS
NEEDS ASSESSMENTS AND SURVEYS Needs assessments are conducted by the school counselor throughout the year. The needs assessment for the beginning of the year asks students about themselves, their home lives, and how the school counselor can best work with them. An Advisor/Advisee survey is conducted at the beginning of the year, at the end of first semester, and at the end of the year to allow for improvements to that program. Surveys are conducted after events and activities to evaluate student learning and interest and areas of success and improvement.
INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING Students receive individual counseling, one-on-one with the school counselor in the counseling office. Students may be referred for individual counseling many different ways: � Teacher referral � Parent referral � Administrative referral � Self referral � Guidance referral Many different counseling theories are used during individual counseling, based on the presenting issue and the desired outcomes. Confidentiality is maintained within the reasonable scope of care.
SMALL GROUP COUNSELING
SMALL GROUP COUNSELING Goals of small group counseling include: � Conflict resolution � Social skill improvement � Relationship building � Academic performance and achievement Small groups generally have 10 students or less Students may be recommended for small group counseling by: � Teachers � Administrators � Self � Parents � School Counselor
LARGE GROUP INSTRUCTION
LARGE GROUP INSTRUCTION Large group instruction is held when the majority of students need to be provided with particular information. Large group instruction is most commonly done with only one grade level at a time. Topics include: � Human Growth and Development � Drug and Alcohol Awareness � Bullying Prevention
ACADEMIC ADVISING
ACADEMIC ADVISING Academic advising activities include: � � � High school registration 7 th grade orientation Study skills Test-taking skills Academic intervention and counseling Academic advising is conducted through the following methods: Individual counseling � Small group counseling � Classroom guidance counseling � Large group instruction � Academic advising is necessary for students in order to: Improve academic performance � Prepare for transitions �
SUMMARY
ALL STUDENTS ACCESS SCHOOL COUNSELING At SMS, our goal is to meet the needs of all students in all domains. Students have access to the school counseling curriculum and department through many outlets. All students are impacted by the school counselor and have input into the school counseling curriculum and department at SMS.
