Proposed Programming • Eight (8) programs are envisioned • (a) Two programs produced by the Festival Team, including the Marquee Program (featuring conversation with ASALH National President and individuals for health industry) • (b) Presentation of ASALH Book Prize • (c) Two presentations by PBS Books • (d) Programs produced by three individual ASALH Branches • The Opening Announcement and Closing credits are not included in the proposed programming. • All Branch programs during the month of February will be promoted as a part of ASALH Black History Month programming.
Suggested Program Concepts/Topics for the 2022 Festival • Black Bodies: Exploitation to Excellence. A discussion of the use of Black bodies in experimentation and exploitation; how experimentation and exploitation led to major issues in the Black community, and at the same time to major improvements in health and wellness, advancement in scientific study; how Blacks may or may not have benefitted from such advancements at the same degree as the larger society. (Produced by Festival Team) • Marquee Program. A discussion featuring the National President in conversation with individuals who are major players from the Health Industry. Suggested Program Concepts/Topics for the 2022 Festival cont… • The Arts and Health and Wellness. Movement and dance (e. g. , stepping, tap dancing, Second Line, Black Line dances) as part of health and wellbeing. • Athletics in Black Health and Wellness. A look at NFL players and the impact of injuries during playing years on long-term health and wellness, including mental and economic health. • Careers in Health and Wellness. A focus on exposing young Blacks to professions where few African Americans are evident (e. g. , infectious disease specialist for US Foreign Service, medical illustrator). • Food, Health and Wellness. The impact of farming, community gardens, and food policy on the health and well-being of African Americans.
Expectations of Participating Branches • Complete and submit brief proposal by October 11, 2021 (Use template provided by Festival Team). Decisions will be made by November 1, 2021. Branches will be notified by the Festival Team. • Upon approval of program, complete the following by December 31 st: a. Submit bio and photo (at least 300 DPI) of speakers/panelists, etc. b. Prepare and submit a marketing flyer (artwork, presenter names/photos, dates, times, places) (if not virtual) • Branch will produce the program in its entirety, requiring minimum support from ASALH staff or Festival Team • Branches may submit up to two program proposals. If selected only one proposal will approved for the Festival. All branch programs will be promoted through the ASALH website and social media platforms. • Adherence to timeline is extremely important to be included in ASALH promotional material regarding the Festival.
