What is service? – Write 3 – 5 words that come to mind when you think of service.

What is service learning? Work with a partner to create a definition of service learning. Draw 5 to 6 slips of paper provided in the envelope. Create a definition of service learning using the phrases you pulled & write it on a sentence strip. Be ready to share.

Definition of Service Learning “Service-learning is a teaching method that enriches learning by engaging students in meaningful service to their schools and communities through a process that is carefully integrated with learning objectives. ” – Generator School Network

Definition of Service Learning “A teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. ” – National Service Learning Clearinghouse

NCDPI “North Carolina's goal is to increase awareness and practice of service learning as an important instructional strategy, learning tool, and framework for engaging schools and community in partnership to increase avenues for student engagement, inquiry-based experiential learning opportunities, and the development of leadership skills, career awareness, career orientation and character development through community-based service”.

Why Service Learning? – Understanding of the importance of each individual making positive contributions to the well-being of his or her community. – Gains in academic engagement, academic competence, and aspirations to pursue postsecondary education. – Acquisition of twenty-first century skills, social-emotional learning. – Increase of conflict management skills and self-control, civic dispositions, and support for their schools. – Boost in staff & student morale. – Being at school becomes relevant.

Connected, Capable, Contributing! – We all want to feel these three things in as members of whatever social environment we are in. – Service Learning supports fulfilling these needs in our students.

Which of these are examples of service? – Presentation at a meeting to share data collected on trash collected – Book drive for summer library on wheels – Researching & gathering data on number of teen pregnancies – Fundraising for non-profit organization (Smile Train, etc. ) – Writing a letter to board of education about – Yard cleanup for elders – Creating a Public Service Announcement about Beach Safety – THEY ALL ARE!

Kinds of Service – Direct service – person to person, face to face – Indirect service – actions benefit the larger community (don’t see the recipients directly) – Advocacy – create a public awareness of an issue or provide voice for a population – Research – gathering data & reporting on info
