Use of Articles • Before we start with the use of articles , we should know about vowel sounds and consonant sounds. • There are 26 letters in English alphabets abcdefghijklm nopqrstuvwxyz

Use of “An” Before the words starting with vowels or with vowel sound, we use “an” Examples • An umbrella • An alarm clock • Words with vowel sound like hour and honour in which “h” is silent and we get a vowel sound, we use “an” before these words • An hour • An honour

Use of “A” We use “a” before the words starting with consonants or consonant sounds. Example • A pen • A hat Words starting with vowels but producing consonant sounds Unicorn starting with vowel “u” but producing sound of consonant “y” , we write a unicorn

Use of “The” • The word “the” is used before nouns to refer to a specific person, place or thing. • “The” is used before a noun which refers to only one thing of its kind. Example. The earth is round. The sun is shining. • “The” is also used before the names of holy books, famous buildings. Example- The Red Fort, The Taj Mahal, The Bible
