Unit Breakdown Continued • Each unit has a menu of activities worth 50 points (or sometimes a little more for a bit of extra credit ) • Each unit has a content quiz you must complete for 25 points. • Each unit has a choice of short essay prompts. You must complete two essays plus responses for 25 points.
Activities • Several activities are associated with each unit. All activities in a unit will add up to 50 points (or sometimes slightly higher—extra credit!!) • Activities are assigned points based on the amount of time and difficulty • Activities will be varied: discussions, mind-maps, quizzes, comments on lecture materials… • Activities have different due dates within each unit. Late work is penalized or not accepted, depending on the activity. This is to keep you moving through the content regularly, to benefit your learning.
Content Quizzes • Each content quiz is worth 25 points • The quiz is made up of multiple choice, true/false, and/or matching questions that can be automatically graded • The material on the quiz is drawn from the readings, videos, and activities for each unit • Quizzes can be taken multiple times until the end of the unit. The highest score will be recorded.
Short Essays • At the end of each unit, each student will write 2 (two) short essays from a menu of prompts. • Essays will be posted on a dedicated discussion board for that unit. • Students will respond to 3 (three) other student essays. • Instructor will evaluate and provide feedback on 1 (one) of the essays • See rubric for more information.
Additional Activities: Supplemental Credit • These are several activities that can be applied to content from any unit, so they are not associated directly with any unit. • If you have a rough time with an assignment or a unit, you may choose to complete one or more of these activities at any time in the course (subject to a final due date). • These activities can boost your grade, but they’re not exactly extra credit—think of them as supplemental credit. • Activities include some fun things like going to a museum, making an audio-guide, and more creative types of assignments. • You can complete each of these activities only once. • See the Additional Activities module for more information and assignments, rubrics, etc.
Grade Scale Your Grade scale is based on 500 points ? ? ? 500 450 400 350 300 All points are equally weighted, there is no curve. Points accumulate throughout the semester. A = 450 and above B = 400— 449 C = 350— 399 D = 300— 349 F = 300 or below Scores of above 500 are possible due to extra credit in units and additional activities (if you complete these!) No additional extra credit is offered
Final Essay Portfolio • Students will revise one short essay from each unit to form a final portfolio. • Selections for the final portfolio do not need to be the essays originally evaluated by the instructor. • If the short essays as originally submitted are excellent, they will not need much revising, and your final portfolio will be easy to complete! • See rubric for more information.
