What is an Arthropod? Arthro = Joint Pod = Foot Bilateral
How do Arthropods move?
Arthropod: Nervous System ● Dorsal brain ○ Ventral ganglionated longitudinal nerve cord ○ Lateral nerves extend ● Sensory nerve endings ● Cuticular hairs
Arthropod: Digestive System ● Foregut and Hindgut ● Almost completely one-way except spiders ● Have typical digestive glands
Arthropod: Excretory System ● Maxillary, Antennae, Coxal glands ● Malpighian Tube ○ Tubules extend alimentary canal
Arthropod: Respiratory System ● Crustaceans ○ Gills ● Terrestrial ○ Book Lungs
Arthropod: Skeletal System ● Thin Outer Layer ○ Epicuticle ● Thick Inner Layer ○ Procuticle ■ Contains: Exo- and Endocuticle
Arthropod: Circulatory System ● Blood flows freely, but… ● Heart pumps blood through arteries
Arthropod: Reproductive System ● Sperm transferred by spermatophores ● Female attracted in two ways ○ Chemically ○ Nuptial dance ● Crustaceans hatch into larvae ● Arachnids carry children on back
5 Main Classes ● ● ● Crustaceans Centipedes Millipedes Arachnids Insects
Crustaceans ● ● Examples: Shrimp, crabs and lobsters Live only in water Have 5 pairs of legs Crush food with specialized mouthparts
Centipedes ● ● A. K. A. “ 100 Legger” 1 pair of legs/segment Poison claws beneath head Meat-eater
Millipedes ● A. K. A. “Thousand-Legger” ● 2 pairs of legs/segment ○ 40 -400 legs ● Eats decaying wood, leaves, plants ● Nonpoisonous
Arachnids ● ● Examples: Spiders, ticks, mites, and scorpions 2 body segments 8 legs Eat with fangs
Insects ● Examples: beetles, flies, and grasshoppers ● 3 segments head, thorax, and abdomen ● 6 legs
Cool Arthropods Facts ● “Jointed-Legger” ○ Muscles attach to exoskeleton at joint ● Cuticle is fibrous chains of alpha-chitin ● 84% of animals are arthropods ○ Several are aquatic and INSECTS
