Commission: Hiring someone to execute a certain work or set of works. • If someone else has an idea and another artist makes their idea happen, the artist is ‘commissioned. ’
Grant: A gift of funds for a specific purpose
Proposal: An idea that is put forward for consideration. • If someone wants to fund the idea a ‘grant’ is awarded.
Deadline: the time by which something must be finished or submitted • ALL working artists have deadlines! • ALL working people have deadlines!
Model: a miniature representation to show the construction or appearance of something

Christo & Jeanne Claude • husband/wife team • Make HUGE public artworks that they pay for themselves by selling the proposal drawings first • Need the help of the entire community to build the artwork. They consider this as much as an art form as the finished product!

Dale Chihuly • Glass artist who works with a team of artists • Creates huge glass sculptures that are placed in a variety of environment (hotels to greenhouses)
Frank Gehry • Architect • Best known in Chicago for design the state in Millenium Park (Priztker Pavillion). • Creates models out of simple materials • Very loose and sketching proposal drawings • Uses organic forms that appear to melt together.
