Chinese Landscape Painting III: Water Patterns Chinese landscape painting became an independent genre by the late Tang Dynasty (618 -907). 山水 (shān shuǐ) refers to a style of Chinese painting that involves the painting of scenery or natural landscapes with brush and ink. The name 山水画 (shān shuǐ huà) literally translates to "mountain-water-picture. " Mountains, rivers, and often waterfalls are prominent in this art form. Landscape painting is considered the highest form of painting in China, with a long history. It consists of four basic elements: rocks, trees, water and mountains. Bodies of water are one of the main elements of landscape painting. In this workshop series, we’ll instruct you in painting water patterns. You will learn some basic techniques, step by step. Art.
