Art Criticism Step By Step Step 1 Description
Art Criticism Step By Step
Step 1 - Description • STICK TO THE FACTS • KEEP YOUR OPINION OUT • Do say: The sculpture is made of a female human structure from the waist up, while the bottom portion morphs into 6 spider legs. The female is wearing a strapless, deep red dress. She is also wearing a red, transparent veil and a white necklace…etc. • Do not say: The sculpture is scary and ugly. I do not like it.
Step 2 - Analysis • EXAMINE AND EXPLAIN THE RELATIONSHIPS OF ELEMENTS OF ART & PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN • Do say: The female spider sculpture is emphasized by central placement and size, making it the most important part of the artwork. The legs have pointed tips to represent a sharp texture that could be used for puncturing a surface or enemy and/or for intimidation. The alternation of the vertical monochromatic pink lines in the background mimic a sheer curtain that allows different values of a chandelier light show through. • Do not say: The artist used line and form.
Step 3 - Interpretation • EXPLAIN THE OVERALL MEANING OF THE ART WORK (AS A WHOLE). • LOOK FOR THEMES & MOODS • IF THE ARTWORK IS NOT YOURS, GUESS! • Do say: The deep red dress and spiked boots gives a feeling of royal dominance. The mood is evil. She is probably on her way to capture and kill her bait with elegance to a fancy ball based on her attire. • Do not say: The meaning is red.
Step 4 - Evaluation • JUDGE THE LASTING QUALITY OR IMPORTANCE OF THE WORK • GIVE AN OPINION NOW; WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS WORK? • Do say: This artwork is very successful because the impeccable craftsmanship is shown through the intricate realistic details. I appreciate how the artist combines two different moods in one. I would like to see another matching piece to reveal more of the story. • Do not say: It means… or It sucks… or it’s good. Be specific!
