DESCRIPTION I can learn that in this picture they are watching a movie in New York. I recognize the seats, lamps, a girl, a theater screen, people, stairs, doors, and curtains. I notice the lines in the curtains, walls, and seats. I spot shapes in the lights, the screen which are squares. Also the lamps which are cylinders. I glimpse at all the value of all the colors on the painting. Looking at the forms of the objects, I can almost feel it. I notice the space he put in the stairs/ theater.

ANALYSIS • The dominant subject matter was the girl standing at the beginning of the stairs. I say this because you see her first out of the painting because she stands out. There is weight due to the contrast in color, it creates the mood of a movie theater. The people look modern, but the movie theater looks vintage. The lights and the stairs creates an illusion of real place. My eyes moves around the painting from the seats to theater screen. The seats unify the image.

INTERPRETATION • The symbolism of the woman is loneliness. She is waiting for someone.

INTERPRETATION • The symbolism of the woman is loneliness. She is waiting for someone. The artist probably wanted to show a person can be so relaxed in one room and yet so frustrated and lonely in another setting. It reminded me of when I go to a movie theater and I wait for the action to begin. People that have been to a movie theater can relate to this painting as well.

JUDGEMENT • The girl standing in what appears to be a real movie theater

JUDGEMENT • The girl standing in what appears to be a real movie theater makes me think that this painting is a success. I feel that this work is unique because I have never seen a painting like this that shows two different sides of a scene. I feel the artist could have added more shading and color to theater seats. I can image how quiet it is due to the dark atmosphere and the oddness of the woman standing alone against the wall.
