											Program Overview & Guidance • Just as with the Army Safety Program, the commander is overall responsible for the Army Safety Awards Program • However, the Aviation Safety Officer is the person responsible for implementing the program for the commander 9
 
											Program Overview & Guidance • Funding is necessary in order to implement a Safety Awards Program Where do you get the money? • You have to plan ahead in your annual budget and request funding for your safety awards program • Non-appropriated Funds (NAF) (On-the-spot cash award-$250) 10
 
											Program Overview & Guidance • Army safety awards will be approved and presented in accordance with the criteria established in DA PAM 385 -10 • Augmentation of Army Headquarters Safety Award Programs with local safety awards is encouraged • Receipt of a safety award does not preclude an individual from receiving a military award or an incentive award 11

											Types of Awards • Awards fall into two categories: Department of the Army (DA)level Awards Army Headquarters and Organizationlevel Awards 14
 
											DA-level Awards (LSA 2) 15
 
											Army Headquarters Safety Award For Major Army Headquarters (ACOM/ASCC/DRU): • Initiated by Army Headquarters Commander, Safety Director, or the Director of Army Safety (DASAF) • Army Headquarters must demonstrate significant improvements, sustained excellence, and/or leadership in mishap prevention programs and performance • The time frame for the award is based on one fiscal year DA Pam 385 -10, para 6 -3 a 16
 
											Army Exceptional Organization Safety Award For organizations below Army Headquarters-level down to battalion-level • The organization is selected by its higher levels of command (through Army Headquarters) with the most effective overall safety program • One nominee in each of the following categories: (Division/Brigade/Battalion/Garrison (or equivalent)) • The time frame for the award is based on one fiscal year DA Pam 385 -10, para 6 -3 b 17
 
											Army Individual Award for Excellence in Safety • For U. S. Army military personnel, DA Civilians, and Army Contractors • One plaque is awarded each fiscal year in each of the following four categories: U. S. Army officer U. S. Army NCO/enlisted DA Civilian employee Army Contractor • The time frame for the award is based on one fiscal year DA Pam 385 -10, para 6 -3 c 18
 
											U. S. Army Safety Guardian Award • Individual must, through extraordinary actions or skills, react to an emergency event or an imminently dangerous situation • Emergencies or dangerous situations resulting from enemy action are not excluded from consideration • Similar to Army Aviation Broken Wing Awards (DA Form 5778) DA Pam 385 -10, para 6 -3 d 19
 
											U. S. Army Aviation Broken Wing Award • Individuals performing authorized aircrewmember flight duties on behalf of the Army while on a DOD mission are eligible • Aircrewmember must, through outstanding airmanship, minimize or prevent aircraft damage or injury to personnel during an emergency situation. Show extraordinary skill while recovering an aircraft from an in-flight emergency situation • More than one aircrewmember may be nominated if both are identified as having materially contributed to the successful recovery • Caveat: An emergency will NOT be considered for the award if Self induced Occurs during simulated emergency requiring no added skill to land successfully Occurs because of noncompliance with published regulations or procedures Determined that no emergency actually existed Lack of discipline or aviator judgment may have induced emergency (panel opinion) Aircraft was in phase of flight with no unfavorable circumstances to prevent safe landing DA Pam 385 -10, para 6 -3 f 20
 
											Director of Army Safety Risk Management Award • For individuals or organizations, including Civilians • An individual or organization must have demonstrated exemplary leadership or made a significant contribution to Army readiness through Risk Management DA Pam 385 -10, para 6 -3 g 21
 
											Director of Army Safety Army Excellence in Explosive Safety • For organizations below Army Headquarters (division, depot, garrison, down to company, shops and/or section level) • • Based on fiscal year THRU memo at the 06 -level DA Pam 385 -10, para 6 -3 i 22

											Army Accident Prevention Award of Accomplishment • Eligibility -- any unit or larger organization • Requirements -- must complete 12 consecutive months, a major training exercise or complete a deployment of greater than 120 days without a Class A, B, or C mishap • Initiated-- by organization commander, manager or safety manager 25
 
											Army Aircrewmember Safety Award • Must complete at least 500 flight hours as an Aircrewmember in a U. S. Army aircraft without having a contributing role in a human-factor-related class A, B, or C aviation mishap • Subsequent awards will be in increments of 500 hours • Approval authority belongs to the appropriate aviation unit commander DA Pam 385 -10, 6 -4 b 26

											Other Awards • Leaders are encouraged to develop awards that recognize the mishap prevention accomplishments and safe performance displayed by individuals within their organization • Leaders may use the DA Form 1119 -1 or are authorized to design and use locally produced certificates or trophies in place of the DA Form 1119 -1 • Awards will be signed by the organization’s leader and will include, at a minimum, the awardee’s name and the contribution for which the award is given DA Pam 385 -10, 6 -4 c 28

											Unit Impact Awards • Impact awards support the safety strategy of the Army to enhance mission readiness through risk reduction and management • Awards should highlight safety-related information that supports the organization’s safety mission • Commanders are encouraged to develop and issue policies for Safety Impact Awards to promote safety • Awareness through on-the-spot recognition of safety related actions which are above and beyond what is required of an individual or organization and would normally go unnoticed DA Pam 385 -10, 6 -4 d 30
