Glossary Multiply: when you take one number and add it together a number of times. Example: 5 multiplied by 4 = 5 + 5 + 5 = 20. We took the number 5 and added it together 4 times. This is why multiplication is sometimes called ‘times ’. Divide: the process of taking a whole item or a set of items and splitting, or dividing, them into equal groups. When you use division , you are starting with a larger number, and breaking it into smaller, equal pieces. Example: 12 divided by 3 = 4 because 3+3+3+3 =12. There are 4 groups of 3. Share: another word for divide. Times: another word for multiply. Operation: adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.
