Aristotle • Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) • Aristotle was a Greek philosopher, a student of Plato and a teacher of Alexander the Great. His writings cover many subjects, including physics, metaphysics, poetry, theater, music, logic, rhetoric, linguistics, politics, government, ethics, biology, and zoology. Together with Plato and Socrates (Plato’s teacher), Aristotle is one of the most important founding figures in Western philosophy. Aristotle’s writings were the first to create a comprehensive system of Western philosophy, encompassing ethics, aesthetics, logic, science, politics, and metaphysics.
Aristotle divided the means of persuasion into: • PATHOS ETHOS AND LOGOS
Pathos (Emotional) • Means persuading by appealing to the reader’s emotions.

Ethos (Credibility) • Or ethical appeal • Is the persuasive appeal based on the projected character of the speaker or narrator.
Example of Ethos • A woman or a doctor speaking on the subject of abortion.
Logos (Logical) • Means persuading by the use of reasoning.
Example of Logos • "The high school dropout rate for black and Hispanic males is the highest, with rates at 11% for blacks and 23% for Hispanics compared to only 6% for whites. Males are much more likely to drop out than females. "
