About the software Arianna 3 and Arianna. Web • Arianna 3 and Arianna. Web are the software tools that Italian company Hyperborea s. r. l. produces with long time experience, for the need of the archival sector; (created in 2000). (http: //www. hyperborea. com) Ø Arianna 3 is the software tool for the description and arrangement of archives. Ø Arianna. Web enables the on-line publication of archival databases. • The software have been developed in a scientific context, the “Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa”, and after that they have been transformed in concrete products for the marketplace. • This imprinting today represents the guarantee of quality of the products that reflect the aim to apply the IC technologies to the cultural heritage sector, in particular to the archival field (historical archives). About the software Arianna 3 and Arianna. Web • Arianna 3 is general software that can describe different archival realities and typologies. Ø It is the ideal tool for an archival policy oriented to coherence, uniformity and interoperability. Ø It is a very flexible tool that can be used in difficult situations characterized by damage and deterioration. • Arianna. Web is a tool that enables the interactive publication of archival database on the Internet. Ø It is a software strictly related to Arianna 3, but Arianna. Web can manage database produced with several archival tools: it uses the XML/EAD standard to preserve and maintain for a long time the documentation in a digital format. Sarajevo, 19 th May 2010

My introduction to Arianna 3 First contact with the software: few years ago through a presentation found on the Internet, looking for some suitable software for historical archives. Trieste Conference in 2008: becoming more familiar with the software functionalities by the lecture of the representative of Hyperborea. In May 2009 NGO “Notar” (the Centre for the preservation and presentation of Kotor’s documentary heritage, www. cdknotar. org) organized a presentation of Hyperborea’s products and services in Kotor, Montenegro. (We thought that it would be a good if the program Arianna 3 we make closer to all potential users in Montenegro). After the presentation in Kotor, by shown interest of experts from Montenegrin institutions, state and church ones, which are dealing with archival, library and museum material, we were encouraged to take on a work of translation of the software Arianna 3 in the Montenegrin language. Preparations for the translation of Arianna 3 In June – the training in the company Hyperborea lasting a few days. (The training was done on the program in Italian language and also description of two fonds from Kotor Archives which were used as an example to insert, were also translated into Italian). The next phase of the work was drawing all the words and sentences (used in the Arianna 3 and Arianna Web, both in Italian and English versions) and entered into Excel, which was done in Hyperborea. At the same time with this translation, it should be prepared the short version of the Handbook, which would be translated in parallel. However, in Hiperborea failed to do it at a time and now it has to be finish soon. Sarajevo, 19 th May 2010

Translation into Montenegrin language The translation of the programme Arianna 3 is very complex job and it should be successive teamwork of archivist or archivists – translators and programme creators, as well as their already experienced users – Italian archivists. About some difficulties which I was faced with during this work on translation: • The programme in Italian language and drawn words and sentences in Excel, (in Italian and English versions), were available in two completely separate formats. • How to separate the terms that were purely information terms from the archival ones. (In Excel through many cases it was very difficult to distinguish to what the term referred). • For information terms one should find and provide appropriate special dictionary. (Microsoft's "Computer Dictionary“, Belgrade 2003). I tried to obtain for IT terms adequate word in our language. • A lack of vocabulary of archival terminology in Montenegro, but also in our environment, in the former Serbo-Croatian language area. • During the work I found that the terms and phrases in the Italian version were partially or completely different from the translation into English. • When the translation was inserted into the program by Hyperborea, only then it was possible to see exactly what should be changed or refined in translation. (The certain parts of the texts were remained unchanged, i. e. in Italian language, despite of easiness for user of programme to automatically change language by copying of appropriate files to the programme installation. Translation into Montenegrin language Some conclusions after my experience of translation and working with the programme Arianna 3 • The translation represents an important meeting between two different archival traditions. • This work also represents an important evolution for the spreading of software outside the Italian context for the first time. • Moreover, when we improve the translation and control to see if it is necessary to add some specific things related to the certain particularities of the archival service in Montenegro, with the small intervention in expressions and dialect, the programme can be used in the former Serbo-Croatian language area.
