Standards for this Rotation 8. RN. 4. 1: Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; recognize when irrelevant evidence is introduced.
Writing Standards 8. W. 3. 1: Write arguments in a variety of forms that – ● Introduce claim(s), acknowledge and distinguish the claim(s) from alternate or opposing claims, and organize the reasons and evidence logically. ● Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, using accurate, credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text. ● Use effective transitions to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among claim(s), counterclaims, reasons, and evidence. ● Establish and maintain a consistent style and tone appropriate to purpose and audience. ● Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the argument presented.
Objectives Learners will be able to: �Identify the elements of an argument in a persuasive essay. �Evaluate an argument, deciding whether or not the evidence is relevant and sufficient. �Create a list of next steps towards writing a successful essay that meets all requirements.
Elements of an Argument What is an argumentative essay? �The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a clear way.

The Purpose �The author wrote that essay because he wanted to persuade people at his or her school to participate in Shut Down Your Screen Week. �What was the purpose of the essay that YOU wrote yesterday?

The Prompt: You have read the article “Shutdown Your Screen Week. ” The author makes the claim that his or her school should participate in a full week of school without electronics. Think about the evidence the author provides and consider if it fully supports the claim. Using details from the article, write an argument analyzing how effectively the author supports the claim. Be sure to include: �your position on how well the author supports the claim �details from the article to support your position �an introduction, a body, and a conclusion
Our Purpose This is NOT about the topic/subject of the essay or your personal feelings about it. For this essay, it does not matter what YOU think about Shut Down Your Screen Week… The purpose is for you to evaluate to writer’s ability to convince people to take his side.
Questions to consider You need to look closely at the essay and ask yourself these questions: �What is the claim? �What were his or her reasons? �Was there enough evidence? �Was the evidence relevant? �Did it make sense? �Is this convincing?
Elements of an Argumentative Essay �A clearly stated thesis statement. �Clear and logical transitions between the introduction, body, and conclusion. �Body paragraphs with reasons and evidence that support thesis. �Counter arguments are addressed and refuted. �A conclusion that does not simply restate thesis, but readdresses it in light of the evidence provided.
Activity �You will now be working with a partner on the Argumentative Essay Analysis Activity. �Please follow the directions on the document in order to successfully complete this activity. �When you are finished, we will review the document that Mr. Caliguiri made his highlights and comments on, so we can compare what you have with what he has.
Once you are finished, go back to your essay and ask yourself the following questions: Did I evaluate the argument or just state my opinion? Did I cite evidence from the text? �Highlight thesis, the reasons, and the evidence in your essay…. Can you find them?
Next Steps �We will be revising these essays and drafting them onto the computer. �Go to the Echo exit journal and answer the questions. You will create a list of next steps that you are going to take that will ensure mastery on the revision of this essay.
