Argon got its name from the Greek word (Argos) meaning inactive. Argon was discovered by Sir William Ramsay who was a Scottish chemist. Also discovered by Lord Rayleigh who was an English chemist. Discovered In 1849 Argon makes up 0. 93% of earth’s atmosphere It is obtained from the air as a byproduct of the production of oxygen and nitrogen. Argon is the third most abundant gas.

Uses Argon is used when an inert atmosphere is needed. It is used to fill incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs to prevent the oxygen from corroding hot filament. It is used as an inert gas shield for arc welding and as a blanket for the production of titanium and other reactive elements. Used in electric light bulbs/fluorescent tubes at a pressure of about 3 mm

Facts o Firs noble gas to be discovered o It is 38% denser than air so it remains closer to the ground o Argon has replaced helium because it does not leak as quickly. o Important documents like the Declaration of independence are stored in a argon filled glass case to prevent decay.
