DH rule- Examples (P/DH means a Player /DH) • Able is listed on the lineup card as P/DH. • Baker replaces Abel in right field. • What is Able’s re-entry status? Result: Result Once Able (P/DH) leaves in either capacity, the Player or the DH, they have left the game for the purposes of the re-entry rule. If Able leaves the game as the Defensive Player but stays as the DH, when they come back into play defense they have RE-ENTERED the game. If Able leaves the game as the Defensive Player in the 2 nd inning and then in the 4 th inning leaves the game as the DH. Able can re-enter the game on defense hitting for himself (just not as a DH). The P/DH gets to come back into the game (in any capacity) only one time. • Able is listed on the lineup card as P/DH. • Baker replaces Abel in right field. • Cain pinch hits for Able. • Cain goes in defensively. • Able replaces Cain Result: Result -Able goes from P/DH to DH for Baker. -Cain replaces Able as DH. Cain is a DH for Baker. At this point Able is no longer able to be P/DH. -When Cain goes in defensively we lose the DH. -Able re-enters and is both a hitter and a defensive player but not a DH.

DH Rule for 2020 Question: The starting pitcher may also be listed as the P/DH? True if listed to start the game If a pinch hitter is used for the DH, is the DH terminated? Yes if used for the P/DH option but no if for DH for a player option The player who was the starting DH may re-enter as the DH? The starting DH has re-entry, as long as we have not eliminated the DH by rule. NO if we are using the P/DH role and we substitute for the DH (offensive substitutions remove the P/DH). That player can re-enter but not as the DH. How can the P/DH leave the game but be able to return as P/DH later in the game? By remaining in the game at all times as the DH. They could re-assume the P/DH role. IF they left the game completely they could return as DH but NOT P/DH.

Rule Change from NFHS… Batted or Thrown ball that lodges in players GLOVE…. NFHS

Rule Change from NFHS… Batted or Thrown ball that lodges in players GLOVE…. NFHS now makes an exception to a previously lodged ball and award for runners. Effective this season any batted or thrown ball that lodges in a players glove, is live and in play. The glove / ball combo can be thrown to a base or used to tag a runner to retire them. Effectively the ball glove /combo is the same as the ball by itself. The exception is listed on page 50 and is part of the awards table for rule 8. 2. 9 This change is also supported in the Case Book on page 16 Casebook 2. 9. 1 Situation D …B 1 hits a two hopper back to the pitcher. F 1 gloves the batted ball but cannot get the ball out of his glove. He quickly removes his glove and shovels it to the first baseman who is in contact with first base. The first baseman catches the glove with the ball in it. Ruling: B 1 is out. The ball is live an in play.
