Katherine Johnson was extremely good at maths and decided to become a research mathematician, even though it was a career that very few women or black people entered in America. She worked for NASA at a time when black women had to eat, work and use toilets that were separate from their white colleagues. When this practice of segregation was stopped, she still faced barriers because she was a woman. She said, “We needed to be assertive as women in those days – assertive and aggressive. . In the early days, women were not allowed to put their names on reports they had worked on”. During her 35 -year career at NASA and its predecessor, she earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped the space agency pioneer the use of computers to perform tasks. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Her story was told in a Hollywood film called ‘Hidden Figures’. What barriers has Katherine overcome? What virtues has she shown?
