Architecture & Engineering In Ancient Greece, people used stone and concrete in order to build infrastructure because it is durable. When making buildings, Greeks also used many people and tools to successfully shape and move the heavy material. In addition, they frequently used columns within their infrastructure, specifically in their temples. This image represents how Greeks influenced our current style of architecture and engineering because it shows how we still use stone and concrete to build our infrastructure, and in the background of the picture one can also see that we still use columns in our buildings as a way of decoration and support like the Greeks did. However, we have also added new ideas of architecture and engineering into our process of building things, such as the use of powerful machines. Government and Law In Ancient China, there were many forms of government. In one of these forms of governments, known as Confucianism, representatives were elected. This image expresses the idea of Ancient China influencing our modern form of government and law because every state in the U. S. has a capital where representatives meet. This is similar to Confucianism, because the representatives make decisions based on what would benefit the citizens of the country rather than what they would want. While the leaders in confucianism don’t exactly meet to discuss issues, the leaders still represent the people's ideas and beliefs.

Arts (paintings) In the Gupta Empire, paintings were extremely important. All nobles were expected to know how to paint, and many common household items were either paintings or tools for paintings in the empire. Citizens also painted on walls in caves rather than paper. People typically painted portraits of royalty and loved ones. and paintings were also found on the walls of caves. This image shows the influence of the Gupta Empire on our modern day art, because our art is similar to that of the Gupta Empire in that we tend to paint similar things on similar canvases. In our society we paint things that are important to us, such as our veterans, and art still exists on walls like in the Gupta Empire. Interactions (movement/military) In Ancient China, Zeng He introduced enormous ships during the Ming Dynasty. These ships changed China’s way of movement and military , because of how advanced and unique the ships were compared to all other ships before them. The image above represents one of Ancient China’s influences on our culture because of their development of powerful ships. In our society today, we have powerful ships too, however our technology is more advanced in that we have extremely powerful motors rather than an abundance of large sails. This allowed for our society to also have a more efficient form of movement and advantage in military uses.

Interaction (trade) One of the most helpful inventions of the Gupta Empire was roads. Roads created an easier way of transporting and trading goods across land. This picture explains the Gupta Empire’s influence on our way of trade because we were able to take their idea of land trade by roads and innovate it into train tracks for bigger and faster ways of trading on land. Science The Gupta Empire was known for it’s intelligence in astronomy, because they were able to identify earth’s location and axis more accurately than the Ancient Greeks! This image displays the Gupta Empire’s influence on modern day astronomy because it is a picture of my brother using an app on his phone that identifies the location, heat level, and arrangement of different items in space depending on the position of the earth. Most of the things that he is able to learn about from this single app, the Gupta Empire was able to figure out. However, it took them much more time, and took many experiments and tests.

Philosophy Entertainment (music) One of Ancient Greeks important qualities that influence our society today is philosophy. In Ancient Greek there were many famous philosophers that began the foundations of our most important fields of knowledge. Herodotus developed the idea of history. The picture above is of a TED Talk. This is influenced by Ancient Greece, because of their philosophers who were able to share their ideas with the rest of Greece. Today we are able to share our ideas via the internet. During the Song dynasty in Ancient China, the chinese developed a sophisticated understanding of timbre, or the idea that every instrument makes a specific sound. The Chinese used that idea to invent stringed instruments and realized that the strings made different sounds depending on how they were touched. The image above is a picture of a modern day electric guitar. This picture represents Ancient China's influence on our modern society because we still use stringed instruments in order to compose music, however ours are more advanced allowing for a larger variety of sounds. These sounds consist of new effects, power, and styles.

Mathematics (geometry) Mathematics (calculator) Ancient Greece was very famous for their many discoveries in mathematics, especially their geometry skills. For example, in Greece there was a famous philosopher named Pythagoras who is said to have “invented math”. He believed that numbers were the key to understanding. The picture above represents Ancient Greece’s influence on our modern day mathematics because the boy in the picture is using the pythagorean theorem to solve a geometric problem. This theorem was named after Pythagoras for his various accomplishments in math. One of Ancient China’s most important and famous invention was the abacus, because it allowed for a drastic change in the ease of calculating big equations. This image shows how Ancient China has influenced our current society because calculators are our modern day way of quickly calculating large math problems. While it is much more sophisticated, it still serves the same purpose as the abacus.

Health (medicine) Another thing that Ancient Greece was famous for was health. After all, Greece was home to one of the most influential health philosophers ever to exist, Hippocrates. Greece’s advancement in health was more focused on medicine, and its ability to prevent and resolve illness, than anything else. This photo shows Ancient Greece’s influence on modern day health because it is a picture of many helpful drugs in a local pharmacy. In our society today we still help prevent and resolve illness with supplements and special treatments. However, our knowledge in health is much more advanced than that of the Ancient Greeks. Health (surgery) Like Ancient Greece, the Gupta Empire also made many great contributions to our modern day knowledge of health. Unlike the Greeks, the Gupta Empire established new technology in health within a different field than pharmaceuticals and drugs. This field is known as surgery. The Gupta Empire was known for pioneering the first discoveries and procedures of surgery. The photograph above is of the surgery check-in sign at Seton Hospital. This photo shows the Gupta Empire’s influence on modern day health because we too perform surgery on patients today, though we are able to do much more complicated surgeries than the Guptas.
