Layout and Design How do I develop appropriate structural details for my elevations?

Fundamental Items: Structure: Walls Windows Doors Roof Lines Electrical/BIBB (faucets) Porches/Decks Chimney Ventilation Used to display the final look of the house- all views. (front, back, left, right) Elevations Glass/Glazing Wall and Roof Materials Louvers/Vents Outlets/Lighting BIBB (faucets) Materials: Vents Saddles Materials Floor/Ceiling/Ground Lines Window/Door Schedules Outlet/BIBBs Chimney Heights Roof Pitch Dimensions and Labels:

Vocabulary Floor Structures- Represent correct foundation and floor structures, materials. Ceiling Structures- Represent correct ceiling locations and joist sizes. Finish Lines- Show correct height of ground, floor and ceiling. Ventilation- Gable or ridge venting required to cool attic and clear moisture. Saddle- A structure used to shed water from a chimney.

Typical Elevations

Elevation Details Chimney Saddle- Used to keep water from puddling behind the chimney. Drawn in as a line on the elevation drawing and labeled. Ventilation- Used to keep the attic and house cool. Vents come in 2 forms: Ridge and Gable. Your house must include ventilation, labeled.

Chimney Heights Calculating Chimney Height- The height of the chimney is important for safety and properation. If the chimney is too short, hot sparks and ashes can exit the chimney and fall to the roof, causing a fire. If proper clearance around surrounding objects (like the peak of the roof) is not provided, down-drafts can cause smoke to enter the house through the fireplace.

Finishing How do I finish and label my elevation drawings?

Vocabulary Fenestration- The design and placement of windows and other openings in a building. BIBB- A faucet having a nozzle bent downward.

Texture and label all materials; show reflection symbol on glass; label all windows and doors with schedule marks; ground/floor/ceiling lines; outlets and BIBBs; label all views; dimensions as necessary. Please refer to grade sheet for more details.
