Arc Resistant Switchgear - Definitions • The term “Arc Resistant” is somewhat misleading • Arc Resistant Switchgear does not prevent internal arcs from occurring • Arc Resistant Switchgear redirects arc gasses away from operator • Equipment is designed to contain the high pressures and heat present during an arc event • Doors are designed to remain closed and vents are designed to seal off during arc event © 2014 Eaton. Arc Resistant Switchgear – ANSI Definitions • Arc Resistant Suffixes • Suffix B • “…designated for equipment where normal operation of the equipment involves opening the door or cover of compartments specifically identified as low-voltage control or instrumentation compartments. ” • Suffix C • “…designated for equipment where isolation from the effects of an internal arcing fault is desired between all adjacent compartments within a switchgear assembly. ” • Suffix D • “…designated for equipment specifically designed for installations where some external surfaces of the equipment are inaccessible and no need exists to use a Type 2 design. ” Ref Std. Arc Resistant Switchgear – Arc Test Duration ü IEEE C 37. 20. 7, section

Arc Resistant Switchgear – Arc Test Duration ü IEEE C 37. 20. 7, section 4. 3 gives a “preferred” arcing duration rating of 0. 5 s, but allows a rating as low as 0. 1 s depending on the speed of the main protective device used in the testing. ü Protective relays, schemes, ZSI, and other fast acting mechanisms fail to consider arcing faults on the line side of the main device, so protection is not complete inside the enclosure when arc resistant gear is not used in conjunction with these protective devices. Arc Resistant Switchgear – Application & Installation Considerations ü What is the k. A

Arc Resistant Switchgear – Application & Installation Considerations ü What is the k. A & time rating required for the equipment? ü What environment will the switchgear be placed in? (ie. internal switchgear room, IPA in C 1 D 2 area) Is a firewall required at exhaust penetration? ü Is direct venting possible? Or will a plenum and associated arc duct be required? (Note that arc duct comes in std 10”, 20”, 30”, & 40” lengths, with 45 deg & 90 deg elbows available) ü If arc plenum and duct is required, has a safe exhaust location been determined? Also, has the duct layout been established? Is any duct required to be outdoor with N 3 R rating? ü Is close coupling to other equipment (ie. transformers, MCCs) required? Modification of the enclosure is not allowed as it may void arc resistant rating! © 2014 Eaton. All Rights Reserved. . 15
