Oct 4 to mimic our issue • Behind the scene, this file you are going to open has set default working space to c: /temp rather then your “profile”, which does not seem to be very acceptable to Arcgis program. • \guardian. ics. purdue. eduthellerMy DocumentsArc. GISDefault. gdb seems to drastically slow functions ( 10 X time to write same data versus C: TempSpatial_tutorialclass. gdb) • I think the default also leads to more probs during calculations

Problem 1 – very long time to open arc. Toolbox. A known issue at semester start, it seems worse. Touch this tool to open it. This really should not take 10 minutes. I think the difficulty (freeze-up) we see when users later try using network directories is also related to this( we can disable network data search - may be good solution to freeze-ups). Current default workspace/scratch space is geodatabase in network copy of profile and is faster, more rugged to use c: /temp instead.

“pause” default network data searches • • One of the first things I would do in any case is shutoff the Search indexing. Do that from Arc. Catalog --> Windows --> Search, click on the "Index / Search Configuration" button at the top of the panel. A dialog box will open and click on the "Pause Indexing". I leave this feature disabled in general as it is not worth the performance impact the indexing entails, and if you are indexing remote database servers--horrors. Do that by setting the hours and days settings to 1800, and removing all items from the Register Folders and Server Connections listing--in any case be sure the "Skip server connections. . " is checked and the "Indexing Status" shows Paused. You can delete the index as well for good measure. OK to save. • Exit from Arc. Catalog and now delete the Arc. Toolbox configuration file-Arc. Toolbox. dat, it is located at: • C: Users<username>App. DataRoamingESRIDesktop 10. 0Arc. ToolboxArc. Toolb ox. dat A new one is created at next launch
