Emergency management ● ● ● GIS's main purpose is to display useable data. GIS allows users the ability to query much more information than they would otherwise be able to on a GPS. GIS would give people access to specific building statistics like which ones are safe havens in case of emergency

How GIS Works ○ ○ ○ allows users to edit features on a given map, and make updates including deleting and creating new roads, adding new buildings or defining new landmasses. displays and analyzes spatial data which are tied to databases. able to update GIS to update outside information inside databases. Layers provide an easy way to organize the information to users. (Spatial Data Model)-Each layer represents a category of information, such as roads or, rivers, buildings or forest covers. (Rational Data Model)-A GIS can perform complicated analytical functions and then present the results visually as maps, tables or graphs, allowing decision-makers to virtually see the issues before them and then select the best course of action.

What GIS can do ? ● Locate geographic features based on their properties ● Identify properties of geographic features based on their location. ● Identify a waste spot , railroad track or interstate's distance from a school or hospital. ● Make colorful, interesting, and informative maps. ● create reports for information that they have analyzed in GIS; these reports can contain text documents, maps, tables and graphs. ● It can make detailed tables which allow users to query specific data types and information. ● It can make charts and graphs that allow users to display the statistical information found on the GIS created maps.

GIS Data Types GEOMETRY-SHAPES(Vector Data)(point, line, polygon, multipoint, or multipatch) RASTER-digital image represented by reducible and enlargeable grid OBJECTID- guarantees a unique ID for each row in a table SHORT INTEGER-Stores Numeric values within a range(-32, 767 to 32, 767) 2 Bytes TEXT-alphanumeric symbols DATE-dates and times presented in mm/dd/yyyy hh: mm: ss and AM or PM

Mecklenburg Map Full map of Mecklenburg County

Campus Map

Interstate Map ● ● Interstates range from blue to green in relation to center of Interstate I-85 runs across Charlotte from East to West. I-77 runs from North to South through Charlotte I-485 runs around Charlotte connecting I-77 North with I-85 East

Railroads Map ● Railroad values label from blue to yellow in relation to the center of the railroads ● Rails run across center of Charlotte ● Train Lot near the border of Carolinas

Wastespot Map ● Wastespots labelled as yellow blots ● Wastespots are any place that chemicals can travel to or are placed ● Stores, Car Dealerships, Schools , Hospitals etc.

Public Schools Elementary Middle and High Schools Scattered across county, most public school closer to the center of Charlotte are in a hazard zone

Private Schools Academies other Private schools have the least amount of hazards, due to being further away from the center of the city

Charter Schools face the most railroad hazards

Hospitals are considered wastespots Accessible from Interstates Hospitals take risks with Chemicals in providing healthcare to the ill, and attempt to make themselves the #1 service for any hazard and injuries that occur through Charlotte.

All Layers on Mecklenburg Closer to the Center of Charlotte a school or hospital is, the more likely it is to be in a hazard zone aquatic and rural areas are the least affected areas for hazards

Bio. Methods LLC Wastespot ● ● With Arc. GIS we localized a specific wastespot called Bio. Methods LLC This allows us to get a greater understanding of which places are in any type of danger from a place that uses chemicals.

Conclusion Our group has used various tools dealing with GIS software. using these tools, we have developed an understanding and were able to build a map with detailed emergency management information. This information will educate the citizens of Mecklenburg County, making a safer environment for everyone. We analyzed and solved specific issues that people were having today such as not understanding what to do when a problem occurs, or knowing when they are in danger at all. This software has helped us define specific information such as building capacity, safe areas, and best route to take to get aways from the disaster areas. Using Arc. GIS we specifically identified Johnson C. Smith University. We labeled each building and all the attributes such as evacuation locations, capacity, name, building manage, and fastest routes to take. Our main goal was to improve the safety of our campus. Through the research we have do we feel that we have made a great first step in the overall goal of making a safer campus and community.
