ANGLO AMERICAN’S METALLURGICAL COAL BUSINESS Australia and Canada • Largest underground coal miner in Australia, and third largest seaborne exporter of metallurgical coal in the world • Five metallurgical coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin – two open cut and three underground – along with additional joint venture interests • Each year Anglo American produces 26 – 30 million tonnes of coal and export 16 - 19 million tonnes of the highest quality hard coking coal, which is used in steel production for critical building and infrastructure around the world. 3
AQUILA MINE Project announcement • In July 2019, Anglo American announced Board approval to expand its metallurgical coal operations in the Bowen Basin through its Aquila project, near Middlemount. • Aquila is an underground longwall operation producing premium quality hard coking coal, used in steel production for critical building and infrastructure around the world. • The project will extend the life of Anglo American’s existing Capcoal underground operations, and continue to optimise the Capcoal complex*. • Aquila will provide ongoing employment opportunities for the company’s underground workforce located in Middlemount. • *Capcoal complex consists of the Capcoal Open Cut Mine, underground Grasstree operations and associated infrastructure, and is a joint venture between Anglo American (70%) and Mitsui & Co. Ltd (30%). 4
AQUILA MINE Development • The Aquila Mine is located south of Middlemount, within Anglo American’s existing mining lease. • It will have a total average annual saleable production of around five million tonnes of premium quality hard coking coal. • Development work will begin this month (September 2019), with steady state longwall production of premium quality hard coking coal in 2022. • Aquila is supported by a range of local, regional and Queensland based suppliers and contractors • Mastermyne has been awarded a development contract for the project to support the initial development and construction, ahead of first longwall production 5
CURRENT STATUS • Commissioning conveyors • Ramping up underground resources • First Continuous Miner overhauled and underground • Road Header on site; to move underground in September • First shaft drilling commenced • Cultural Heritage Management commenced 6
