H. I. P. P. O’ing Documents Historical Context: Analysis of ‘Historical Context’ involves connecting a document to specific historical events, to specific circumstances of time and place, and/or to broader regional, national, or global processes. Identifying the ‘Historical Context’ places the document within broader trends which are contemporary to the source. It might also connect the document across time to earlier and later eras, or across space to events happening in different places. *Look at source line. * Intended Audience: Explain to the Reader who the author had in mind when he/she created the document. Purpose: Explain to the Reader why was the document created? What was the goal of the author? Point of View: Point of view is the perspective, which shows us the opinion, or feelings, of the author. Examine identity of the author (e. g. race, gender, political affiliation, religion, etc. ) Outside Information: Explain to the Reader outside information that is NOT contained in any of the documents (but is relevant) and that supports your thesis. *Do this FIRST, after you have broken down prompt. *

O - Phrases in DBQ Essay Historical context: “the historical context of this document is__________. ” Intended Audience: “the author’s intended audience was __________” and “is shown by________. ” Purpose: “the author’s purpose in writing was to _______” and “is shown by_______. ” Point of View: “the author’s point of view in this document was __________” and “is shown by_______. ” Outside Information: Make sure you use the Outside Information to Answer The Question (ATQ) within the time period!!!

Step #1 - Breakdown Prompt To what extent did the American Revolution fundamentally change American society? In your answer, be sure to address the political, social, and economic effects of the Revolution in the period from 1775 to 1800.

Step #2 – Brain Dump • Once you have broken down the prompt, write down a list of all the info (e. g. terms, events, ideas, people, etc. ) you can recall from that time period. • As you analyze the documents, cross out items on your list that are found in the documents. • The items not in the documents can be used to get your point for Outside Information. ; )

Step #3 – Analysis • Write down the HIPPO acronym after you have broken down the prompt. • Follow the Shotgun Method – quickly identify two to three pieces of HIPPO per document. • You should recognize that the majority of documents support one side. • Organize the documents. Those that support and those against your thesis.
