APRS PRN DATA Transceiver 31012 Project By Samuel

APRS/ PRN DATA Transceiver , 3/10/12 Project By Samuel Berezhinskiy Problem Definition As technology moves forward we advance in how we use different devices while, allowing these device to be more connected toward 1 or 2 systems. This is either the internet or a cell tower infrastructure. But what would happen if those two communication mediums went down? Schedule: 1/24/12 Propose Project 2/10/12 Assemble Display 2/24/12 Assemble Transmitter 3/5/12 Combine Separate Systems into one Resources: Matrix display -- Purchased Intermediate components – Purchased Transceiver – Completed Build • • • Competitive Analysis Currently there is little to no competition in the APRS market, causing a surge in pricing for solutions currently available. This gives an opportunity for companies in this industry to keep building on this technology, and monopolize on it by integrating APRS/ PRN into everyday devices, mainly for backup communication. • • Potential Applications Backup infrastructure in case of any sort of disaster. Alternative for military/ civilian communication. Can easily create a mass networks of repeaters, to cover large areas Great for security systems, vehicle tracking, etc… This technology is already applied to weather reporting systems. APRS use for Lo-Jack is simple and effective, and of course a lot cheaper, as there would be no monthly premium. • • • Solution Specifications • • My project currently receives data ( currently one-way communication is setup) from a transmitter communicating with a computer terminal, and displays data it received onto a Dot-Matrix Display. The RF link setup that I had assembled is fairly simple and demonstrates the APRS equivalent, that would exist. Currently APRS transceivers range from $80 -$220, making it unreasonable to integrate it into my current project. • • • Future Improvement Ideas • • Making the device more compact and integrated. Reducing or sizing down unnecessary components. Engineering & Computer Science Departments
