Approval of the Assembly Interdisciplinary Lectures • The Bureau unanimously approves the following list of Assembly Interdisciplinary Lectures: Penelope Boston (alt. Laurie Barge) Search for Life Sofia Randich (alt. Gerald Gilmore) Gaia Bruce Wielicki (alt. Graeme Stephens) Climate Alex Hayes (alt. Hand, Senske) Ocean Worlds Pan Jianwei (alt. Anton Zeilinger) Quantum networks Daniel Baker and Mikhail Panasyuk 60 years of Radiation Belts • The Bureau also agrees on the proposed Public Lecture by Sarah Seager on Exoplanets and on holding as a Special Event an International Space Panel on Exploration.
COSPAR 2020 The Bureau unanimously approves the period 15 -23 August 2020 as the preferred dates for the 43 rd COSPAR Assembly to be held in Sydney, Australia.
Other COSPAR organized and co-sponsored meetings (capacity building workshops and Symposia excluded) • The Bureau unanimously agrees to organize or co-sponsor the following events and approves the allocation of funds as indicated hereunder: • 51 st ESLAB Symposium on Extreme Habitable Worlds, ESTEC, The Netherlands, 4 -8 December 2017 (€ 1 K) • COSPAR Colloquium: Planetary Protection Phobos and Deimos, proposed by the PPP Chair, ESA site, 2 nd half of 2017 (€ 2. 5 K) • COSPAR/Radiation Research Society Symposium, proposed by the LSSR Editor-in-Chief, Cancun, Mexico, October 15 -18, 2017 (€ 5 K) • 31 st ISTS, 3 -9 June 2017, Matsuyama-Ehime, Japan (no funding) • 2 nd General Var. SITI symposium and summer school, 9 -15 July, 2017, Irkutsk, Russia (€ 1 K) • COSPAR Workshop: Planetary Protection Protocol for Restricted Earth Return Missions, proposed by PPP Vice-Chair, NASA Astrobiology Institute, Moffett Field, USA, 1 st half of 2018 (€ 2. 5 K) • XI COLAGE Conference, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2017/early 2018 (€ 1 K)
Any other business • The Bureau unanimously approves the project to move the Secretariat office from Paris to Montpellier and mandates the Executive Director: • (1) to expedite its achievement in the best interest of COSPAR and its employees; and, • (2) to report on its implementation to the Bureau in March 2018 in Paris.
Formal duties of NC /COSPAR • The only formal duty for National Committee Representatives is to participate in COSPAR Council meetings/discussions. • We hope that National Representatives will consult with members of the National Committees or the national space science community in general in order to encourage award nominations, nomination of candidates for office, contributions for COSPAR publications, compiling of the national report to COSPAR, etc.
