Issues perceived / assumed o o Not every kid that is “College material” wants or needs to go to college. Most “Problem Students” are not a good fit for the trades either…Most wash out pretty quickly and have the same issues you dealt with A LOT of my year one apprentices are college grads and even advanced degree holders Only a small minority of recent high school graduates are even competitive for Apprenticeship Programs

Apprenticeship 101 o Local committee control n Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) o o Made up of Employers / Employees from Industry Standards/Policies Approved by the Oregon State Apprenticeship Council Electrician - Administered by Mid-Oregon IEC Other - Administered by ATS
What is Apprenticeship? o o o Apprenticeship trains workers to meet industry standards for a given occupation. Employers and skilled workers design training programs “Create the Standards” Apprenticeship is a proven training model for people to learn careers
How does it work? o o o 2 - 4 Year “Paid” Training Program Majority of learning is On-the-job 300 – 600+ Hours or more in the classroom Classes typically held in the evenings License or Journeyman status upon completion

How does it benefit employers o Increases productivity. n o Motivated and highly trained workers produce better products, have better work habits and are absent less often. Increases worker safety. n Training helps workers better understand their jobs and their accompanying risks, and helps them avoid job-related injuries, saving employers time and money.
Benefit for Employers o Reduces labor turnover. n o o Apprentices see the time and energy spent in the classroom as a long term investment in their careers. Provides the employer with employees who can adapt to new technologies. Provides an effective way to screen new employees both during and after the program.
Employee Benefits o o o Paid employment during training. Opportunity to learn skills needed by employers throughout an industry. Credit towards an associate degree A more secure career and the ability to adapt to new job requirements. The background to become a lead person, foreman, or supervisor.
Qualifications o o o At least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of acceptance into the program High School Graduate or Equivalent Algebra with a ‘C’ or better
Selection Process o Local Committee establishes “Openings” n n o Dates / Times Number of new hires Minimum of 30 days prior Opening Announcements sent to: n n BOLI Schools Employment Division Web Sites
Typical Year – Electrician Opening o o 100 – 150 Applicants 20 - 25 positions Applicants ranked by a point system Points awarded for: n n Classes taken Experience Recommendations Pre-Apprenticeship classes taken
Common Problems o Applicants come unprepared n n n o No follow-through n o Transcripts Letters of recommendation/previous experience Proof of experience Don’t respond to requests Unrealistic expectations n “I have a friend…. ” “I know this guy”
A bit about the process o o o Applications for MOST programs are accepted on a periodic basis (Annually, Quarterly) Some of the smaller programs are open year round Some programs are “Closed” Programs and are not open to the general public Applicants need to be prepared to wait (I have had individuals wait as long as four years to get accepted) Register with OED prior to get informed of openings

Common issues I frequently hear from employers and supervisors
o o o Not Teachable Not Humble Zero mechanical aptitude/abilities Clean up your messes Cell Phones Unable to be on time!!! Doesn’t Ask questions / Assumes Does not dress professionally (Baggy jeans etc) Shows up without the required tools Inability to accept mistakes Waits to be told to start working Stands around with hands in pockets!
