How do core classes work? *Teachers make recommendations for student placement based on academic grades, academic progress, lexile scores and test scores. 3
State Mandated PE Credit • All middle school students must take 1 full year of Health and Wellness in 6 th grade and then 1 year of PE credit. You can earn this credit by taking 1 PE in either 7 th or 8 th grade: – Health & Wellness 4
How do Electives work? • Since we will have 8 classes next year, you can then choose 2 electives of your choice to take along with your 4 core classes + Advisory (How to Study). We will also ask you to choose 2 additional alternate elective choices in the event that your electives do not work in the schedule. • Please be advised: If you need additional classes such as enhanced math, structured literacy or dyslexia class- these may replace one of your electives. • *FWISD is still making decisions about scheduling. If the district mandates a specific elective be taken- we will go by the order of your electives for scheduling. Ex. If FWISD requires every middle school student to take a CTE course in both 7 th and 8 th grades you will have 4 core classes, a CTE course and your 1 st two elective choices. 5
What Electives are offered? • PE (if you want to take it in both 7 th and 8 th grade) • Theatre • Art • *Band • *Choir • *Orchestra *Directors place students according to ability. 6
Can I change the course request? • Once you have selected your electives along with alternate elective choices you will have your selection emailed to you. • The ALA counselor will begin putting this information into the computer and a printout will be given to students mid-Spring. At that time if you want to make changes you can contact the ALA counselor through email or phone. A deadline will be given to students and parents for the last day to make changes to course requests. • Please understand that your elective choices may not always be possible with the schedule. You need to be okay with all of your alternate choices as well. We do our best to place students but we do occasionally have to use alternate choices. • Course requests will then be used to develop the 2021 -2022 ALA Schedule. 7
