After completion of the course, the student should be able to: • define different methods of epidemiological surveillance and its critical components • list the main fields of use of descriptive epidemiological data • describe the data sources that are used for epidemiological surveillance in different contexts • assess the quality of various epidemiological surveillance systems • carry out and interpret statistical analyses of population based data to describe occurrence and distribution of health and health determinants

The individual assignment consists of the compilation of a short public health report and a short oral presentation. The report scope is optional. Maximum of 6 pages excluding title page and references.

The written assignment includes: • Title page • Abstract/Summary • Introduction (including aim and research question(s)) of the public health issue – in context (literature review) • Methods - Descriptive data analyses OK • Results (text and tables/figures) • Discussion – Conclusion – Interpretation (including relevance for public health policy/practice and limitations)

Oral presentation • “Elevator pitch” – stakeholder, policy maker, funder, journalist (the public) • 2 minutes person • No slides • Content: Main finding – what does it mean? Why is it important? What should be done?
