Application Download What you should know about unsafe
Application Download What you should know about unsafe application downloads Some apps and software products are unsafe – especially apps and software that has been downloaded from sources you can’t verify. An unsafe app or software download can install malicious software (malware) on your machine and across our network that can harm you and the company in many ways. For example, it might install ransomware that encrypts all of our files and demands payment in order to decrypt them. Or it might install a keylogger that tracks all your keystrokes, including any passwords you enter. Or it might secretly turn on your webcam and microphone, so everything you’re doing can be seen and heard – including your conversations about confidential company plans and information How to avoid unsafe application and software downloads: • If you need software that isn’t already on your computer, tablet, or smartphone, ask IT to provide it, to provide an equivalent alternative, or to confirm its safety before you install it • Don’t download mobile apps from sources other than the official app stores, or other sources the company has specifically authorized • Don’t install software provided to you in email attachments, on USB flash drives, or from any source you can’t verify • Make sure up-to-date anti-malware software is running on your computer, so unsafe software can’t invisibly install when you visit an infected website
