Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father
Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Chapter Two: The First Commandment in our own Day
Lesson 1: First Commandment
Worship or Adoration To worship or adore means to recognize and treat God as the greatest being, as the source of all being, and to devote ourselves entirely to him. Do we worship just the Father? Or all the Persons of the Trinity? Since God is the Creator, God deserves credit as the author of creation. Nothing in creation, not even angels or the highest of saints, should be worshipped.
“Because I Said So” Worship of God is NOT something that we do solely because God is more powerful than us, or will punish us; it’s not that we’re “bullied” into it The desire and the need to worship God is built into our very nature; we are made in God’s image, made to know, love, and serve him. Only then can we be truly happy, for God is our highest good. While we can be punished for failing to do this, the punishment is primarily in the spiritual damage and deprivation to which we commit ourselves. Think of it like stubbornly avoiding food at all costs; you will grow hungry, and eventually bodily processes will start to break down.
Creator/creature division • There is a divide between God, the Creator, and all of creation. • We believe God is transcendent; God is NOT part of creation.
Idolatry To worship as God something that is not God; to elevate above God, the Creator, something that is a created thing, or a creature It erases the Creator/creature distinction: 1) Raising the creature up to the level of the creator 2) Lowering the Creator to the level of the creature Genesis 3: 5, “God knows well that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, who know* good and evil. ”
The Golden Calf Who here knows the story of the Golden Calf?
The Fall and Idolatry The Bible teaches us that our hearts become, to some extent, idolatrous as a result of the Fall. We elevate ourselves, or other things, above God in our desires and in our actions. Even after we are spiritually reborn in baptism, desire towards sin…desire to “on some level” commit idolatry…remains.
Romans 1: 18 -25 The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them. Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. As a result, they have no excuse; for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened. While claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of four-legged animals or of snakes. Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual degradation of their bodies. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
Do We Honor Other Things? Some Christians believe that, because the danger of idolatry is so great, we should avoid any chance of committing it. This is what is known in formal logic as the “slippery slope fallacy” – when one assumes that a particular result will always result from one initial step/situation when it does not. E. g. “Some people might drink and drive, therefore no one should ever drink. ” While it is true that some people will commit idolatry when honoring other things, they will not all the time, and not everyone will.
The Artist Imagine the following scenario: You are speaking with a painter and praising him for his abilities and skill. When he asks you, “Which of my paintings do you like best? ”, you respond with, “Oh, no! I’m not going to praise your paintings. I don’t want to risk not giving enough honor to you, or honoring them more than you!” Does that make sense?
Honor/Veneration Romans 13: 13, “Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due. ” Paul would not say this if God was the only being worthy of honor. Exodus 20: 12, “Honor thy father and mother…” God would not command us to honor our parents if God was the only being worthy of honor. When we honor things created by God, we honor God. As Romans 1 said, “Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. “ So when we honor those things in creation which reflect God, we honor God.
Do Catholics Worship Mary? No. https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=WWa. Lx. FIVX 1 s God is the Creator, and we worship & adore only him. Mary is a creature, a created being. We honor or venerate her. While we “pray to” Mary, “pray” can just mean “to ask. ” In the Hail Mary, we ask Mary to pray to God for us; we aren’t treating Mary like the highest being when we are asking her to appeal to the highest being on our behalf!

Heresy, Apostasy, and Schism Heresy – to deny a truth of the Faith E. g. “I don’t believe that Jesus is God. ” Apostasy – to deny or reject the true religion of Catholicism E. g. “I don’t anymore. ” believe in Christianity Schism – to deny the authority of the Church, as it was entrusted by Jesus Christ E. g. “I believe in Christianity and that Jesus is God, but I’m not going to obey/agree with my bishop/the Pope. ”
Doubt Involuntary Doubt – hesitation in believing, difficulty in overcoming objections connected with the faith, or also anxiety aroused by its obscurity. If deliberately cultivated doubt can lead to spiritual blindness. Voluntary Doubt – disregards or refuses to hold as true what God has revealed and the Church proposes for belief.
Presumption is the sin of committing a sin with the attitude that one can always repent and be forgiven of it later.
Love God, Love Neighbor Matthew 22: 37 -40, “He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments. ” If we are made in the image of God, we fail to properly love God when we fail to love ourselves, or others.
Impiety Being irreverent or disrespectful of God or sacred things. Just as we are to respect God and the things that reflect God, if we disrespect those things which reflect God, we are disrespecting God.
Irreligion 2118 God's first commandment condemns the main sins of irreligion: tempting God, in words or deeds, sacrilege, and simony. 2119 Tempting God consists in putting his goodness and almighty power to the test by word or deed. Thus Satan tried to induce Jesus to throw himself down from the Temple and, by this gesture, force God to act. 49 Jesus opposed Satan with the word of God: "You shall not put the LORD your God to the test. "50 The challenge contained in such tempting of God wounds the respect and trust we our Creator and Lord. It always harbors doubt about his love, his providence, and his power. 51 2120 Sacrilege consists in profaning or treating unworthily the sacraments and other liturgical actions, as well as persons, things, or places consecrated to God. Sacrilege is a grave sin especially when committed against the Eucharist, for in this sacrament the true Body of Christ is made substantially present for us. 52
Irreligion 2121 Simony is defined as the buying or selling of spiritual things. 53 To Simon the magician, who wanted to buy the spiritual power he saw at work in the apostles, St. Peter responded: "Your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain God's gift with money!"54 Peter thus held to the words of Jesus: "You received without pay, give without pay. "55 It is impossible to appropriate to oneself spiritual goods and behave toward them as their owner or master, for they have their source in God. One can receive them only from him, without payment. 2122 The minister should ask nothing for the administration of the sacraments beyond the offerings defined by the competent authority, always being careful that the needy are not deprived of the help of the sacraments because of their poverty. "56 The competent authority determines these "offerings" in accordance with the principle that the Christian people ought to contribute to the support of the Church's ministers. "The laborer deserves his food. "57
1 Corinthians 11: 23 -32 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. ” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. ” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment* on himself. That is why many among you are ill and infirm, and a considerable number are dying. If we discerned ourselves, we would not be under judgment; but since we are judged by [the] Lord, we are being disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
Canon Law Canon 915: Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to holy communion Canon 916: A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass or receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession unless there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess; in this case the person is to remember the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition which includes the resolution of confessing as soon as possible.
Superstition What is superstition? It is placing our trust in something other than God. People don’t worship statues so much anymore, but they do put trust in: horoscopes, psychics, numerology, tarot cards, ouija boards, etc. Some people even worship the devil
