Do you have a thesis? • You have to have one. • An AP reader can tell in a moment if your essay is going to be strong or weak based on your thesis. • Thesis should be two or three sentences. • Thesis must include specific information that responds to the prompt question. • A good thesis tells us what we are going to talk about. The flow of silver during the 16 th to 18 th century was affected by social and economic aspects, of women, slavery and trade.
A Good thesis has two parts. 1. Specifically address the terms of the prompt question. 2. Sets up the structure for the rest of your essay (Give specific information) • If you don’t have a thesis you won’t have an essay.
2010 DBQ Essay Prompt: • Using the following document, analyze similarities and differences in the mechanization of the cotton industry in Japan and India in the period from the 1880 s to the 1930 s. Identify an additional type of document and explain how it would help your analysis of the mechanization of the cotton industry.
2010 DBQ Thesis: • The mechanization of the cotton industry in Japan and India is similar in the way women are treated, the introduction of industrial tools, the class social structures, and where they came from i. e. rural. The mechanization of the cotton industry in Japan and India is different in who worked women vs. men and size of labor force.
