A. Thesis/claim • Explicitly stated in the introduction & repeated in the opening of your conclusion. • Thesis may appear as one or more sentences (often compound). • A mere restatement of the prompt is NOT acceptable & will NOT earn any points. • You must present a thesis that can be backed by historical evidence and provide specific ANSWERS to ALL parts of the essay question. • Develops & supports a cohesive argument that addresses historical complexities and shows the relationships among historical evidence.
Contextualization • Describes a broader historical context relevant to the prompt • Must relate to the topic of the prompt with historical events, developments, or processes that occur before, during, or continue after the time frame of the question.
B. EVIDENCE • 1. The Documents: Uses SIX documents to support thesis/claim by directly quoting a short excerpt from each document and explaining how it supports the argument in response to the prompt. 2. Outside Evidence: Uses at least ONE additional piece of specific historical evidence beyond the documents relevant to the argument about the prompt.
Analysis & Reasoning 1. For at least THREE documents you must explain how or why the document’s point of view, purpose, historical situation, or audience is relevant to an argument. 1. Demonstrates a complex understanding of historical development that is the focus of the prompt, using evidence to corroborate, quality, or modify an argument that addresses the question.
Sample Document Usage & Analysis -author/title lead in -“quoted excerpt” (Doc #) -analysis Khan stated, “If the Muslims do no take to the system of education introduced by the British, they will…sink lower and lower” (Doc 1). Mr. Khan expresses the need for greater education levels in order to have progress in the Muslim world. Point of view must be considered in Khan’s excerpt for his career as an educator and founder of an Anglo-Oriental College clearly influences his positive perspective towards the European education model. He is a direct product, recipient, and employee in the system he advocates for.
How to use 4 side & underline: • In May you can write on your documents! Take advantage of this! • Around the 4 sides of the document make notes to organize your DBQ. It’s the fastest & most efficient way to work the documents during your 15 minute reading period! • Top Side=Main Idea of Doc • Right Side=Outside Evidence • Bottom Side=Sourcing Analysis & Context • Left Side=Argument Development/Grouping • Underline w/in the Doc a short excerpt you will quote from in the body paragraphs.
Unit Three Exam DBQ: • You will prepare for our Unit Three Exam DBQ in advance. • You may write on & work the documents on your prep handouts. However these may NOT be used on exam day. • You may NOT write on the actual Unit 3 Exam DBQ on 12/14 documents next week, as I only want to run 1 class set to save paper.
Your task: 1. Take 15 minutes to preview to documents & use 4 side underline technique to jot down some ideas. 2. Meet with your U 3 team & discuss ideas for answering the DBQ prompt. 3. Use your DBQ planning sheet & prepare for this DBQ Essay in advance of the U 3 Exam next week.
