The fork vibrates at its fundamental frequency, so a single tone is heard. A tone is a sound with a definite frequency. As the fork vibrates, the compression waves propagate outward. The pressure differences in the compression waves causes the eardrum to vibrate. On the other side of the eardrum, tiny bones (the hammer, anvil, and stirrup) carry the vibrations to the inner ear. The auditory nerve picks up the signal and carries it to the brain.
