Disadvantages • It may be hard to keep all of your students on task during certain experiments and demonstrations • If something goes wrong with a demonstration or experiment you may lose focus of the class • These types of activities may take up more time and need more preparation than traditional lecture

KWL (Know-Wonder-Learn) • Assessing Prior Knowledge; Exploring New Content • Using handouts or posters, students write what they “K” know or think about a topic and then add any questions they “W” wonder about or want to have answered • As an ending activity, the students complete the “L” segment to record any new concepts that they have learned • Offers a visual demonstration of the three-point process of assessing prior knowledge
Advantages • Gets students thinking critically about the topic • Provides evidence that they took something away from the unit and learned / grew • Easy way to have a built in instant activity for the first day of a new unit.
Disadvantages • What if the students know nothing about the subject? • They may feel disheartened • The papers need to be kept the entire unit so there may be a risk of students or teacher losing them • If students are not paying attention or are stubborn they have a risk of not learn anything
