Recap: What does Herodotus fail to mention • Remember Herodotus does not tell us

Recap: What does Herodotus fail to mention • Remember Herodotus does not tell us everything: • The Athenians took up a defensive position and planned to starve the Persians. They would not fight. • On the 4 th day Datis decided to take his cavalry and best troops to invade Athens. This left a weaker army behind. • Militiades took this opportunity to attack the remaining force under Artaphernes command. • After winning the battle Militiades made his men march to Athens in order to stop Datis’. In this lesson we will: • Learn how to plan an essay. • Learn how to structure a paragraph. • Look at the mark scheme and write our essay.

In this lesson we will: Planning sheet Paragraph heading and what to include: What Herodotus says What Herodotus misses/ made up • Learn how to plan an essay. • Learn how to structure a paragraph. • Look at the mark scheme and write our essay. Rank in order: Explain why it helped Athens. Miltiades convinces the Athenians to fight. His experience against the Persians; His role in the War council – convincing the Athenians not to give Earth and Water. Importance of Democracy The Athenians refusal to give Earth and Water. Fear of Hippias return. (Hippias and his tooth) Platean help. Geography of Marathon Closeness to Athens. Miltiades took up a defensive position to starve the Persians. Ability to march back the Athens before Datis. The battle The thin centre and strong wings. Lack of Persian cavalry.

An example paragraph • Miltiades was crucial in convincing the Athenians to fight. •

An example paragraph • Miltiades was crucial in convincing the Athenians to fight. • (First of all we look at Herodotus)According to Herodotus Miltiades was the most important of the 10 generals chosen by the people of Athens. Miltiades convinced the war council to fight and to refuse Earth and Water. Herodotus refers in detail about how Miltiades convinces Callimarchus to fight. Whilst this is an interesting story we cannot be sure that this is accurate. Herodotus was not alive during the Battle of Marathon and relied on other people to tell him the story. It is very likely that Herodotus made this up to make his story more interesting. • (Then we go into more detail using knowledge) The Athenians were concerned that they were not going to get Spartan help and so Miltiades played an important role in convincing the Athenians to protect their democracy. His leadership inspired others to fight against their ex-tyrant Hippias and the Persians who wanted revenge. • (Finally we explain by ranking/linking the factor) In my opinion this was the most significant factor because if Miltiades had not convinced the Athenians to fight there would not have been a battle of Marathon and the Athenians would have been defeated without a fight. In this lesson we will: • Learn how to plan an essay. • Learn how to structure a paragraph. • Look at the mark scheme and write our essay.

Succeeding in Ancient History The top row shows Level 5 – where you need to show a THOROUGH understanding. The bottom row shows Level 4 – where you need to show a SOUND understanding. You will achieve this by starting to revise now. You will achieve this by beginning to learn the stories well In this lesson we will: • Learn how to plan an essay. • Learn how to structure a paragraph. • Look at the mark scheme and write our essay.

Succeeding in Ancient History What grade should I aim for. A*=27 -30 A=24 -26

Succeeding in Ancient History What grade should I aim for. A*=27 -30 A=24 -26 (If you get L 5 for everything you will have an A) B=21 -23 C=18 -20 (If you get L 4 for everything you will have a C) D=15 -17 (If you get L 3 for everything you will get a D) In this lesson we will: • Learn how to plan an essay. • Learn how to structure a paragraph. • Look at the mark scheme and write our essay. Thorough means that you include all the important areas. Sound means you include most areas with some detail. L 3 asks for some of the areas to be covered. This has 4 -5 marks for each area.
