The Hellenic League • Once the Greeks heard about Xerxes plans the Spartans and the Athenians organised a meeting at Corinth. • This was called the Hellenic League. • Leonidas, the Spartan King, decided to command the land army and would travel to Thermopylae. • Themistocles would command the navy and travelled to Artemisium to protect the land army. • Sparta wanted the fighting as far from them as possible. Battle of Artemisium • Themistocles decided to beach his ships to protect them from the storm. • The Persians did not do so and when they travelled to Greece they lost 1/3 of their ships in a storm. • On the first day of the battle the Greeks used a new tactic to surprise the Persians and destroy 30 ships. • On the second day the Persians rested. On the third both sides took heavy losses – but Themistocles decided to retreat when he heard the Spartans had lost at Thermopylae. Different tactics • The Persians were better sailors and had lighter ships. • They would sail inbetween their enemies and ram their ships – sinking them. • The Greeks had heavier ships. They would board their enemy ships and defeat them using their hoplites. • They also adopted a semi-circle to make it more difficult for the Persians to use their numbers.
