Gaudi Facts § He was sickly when he was young and became a vegetarian at a young age due to the advice of his physician. § Elies Rogent, the Director of the Barcelona Architecture School once said of Gaudi, “We have given this academic title either to a fool or a genius. Time will show. ” § His first project was to make lampposts in the Plaza Real (Royal Plaza) in Barcelona. The lanterns are still there. § His most famous work and masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, is still incomplete. Gaudi took over the construction of the church in 1883, and worked on it until he died. The present design being worked on is based on models he left. Depending on who you ask, the estimated completion date for the massive church is either 2017 or 2026.
How did Gaudi become an architect? Antonio Gaudi became an architect because he moved to Barcelona to study at ‘The School of Architecture’. Antonio became famous for the buildings that he created later on in his life.
Park Güell This is the serpentine bench in Park Güell. It was constructed from 1900 -1914. Located in the district Barrio de la Salut, this was designed as a garden city project with housing, communal areas and a market, among other things.
Casa Batllò This is the Casa Batllò. It was constructed from 19041906. Casa Batlló was declared a UNESCO world Heritage Site in 2005. In the middle of Passeig de Gràcia, the avenue in which families were settling, Josep Batlló acquired in 1903 a sombre building which Gaudí, would transform into one of his most original works.
Sagrada Familia This is the Casa Batllò. It was constructed from 1882 present. The Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia construction on which was begun in 1882, is today one of the icons of Barcelona, and is known all over the world. It’s expected to be completed in 2026, to mark the 100 th anniversary of Gaudí’s death.
