ANTIMATTERS Heather Wark University of Liverpool
Feedback from Communication Training • Families learn together • The youngest child leads the visit • ~3000 visitors organised by schools • Could check syllabus links *A leaflet with all info will be produced to be given to all demonstrators • Beware of controversial questions • Could write up some model answers • Three key messages need to be simplified • Short phrases people will remember, with another layer for more information
Key Messages • There’s almost no antimatter around today and we don’t know why - Just after the Big Bang the Universe was half antimatter but now it’s almost all gone • Experiments at CERN investigate antimatter - LHCb and ALPHA measure the differences between matter and antimatter very precisely to figure out why antimatter is so rare • Antimatter can be used in medicine - For example, PET scanners use antimatter to monitor cancerous tumours but there are many other uses
Kids’ Zone • Family activity suitable for under-10 s • Make and Take: Flextangle https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=pta 1 R 7 g 05 Xg • Simple fold and stick paper toy • Usually coloured in like a folding kaleidoscope • Could print antimatter versions ahead of time • Multiple designs using logo and key messages
Other Possible Activities • CP violated mandala worksheet • Print at home, follow guidelines for colouring rules and check with a mirror • Could cut out pieces and fit together like a jigsaw • Keep the antimatter stable game • Phone/tablet app to keep antimatter from falling to the edge • Use in-built gyro - like a spirit level • Could even make this as a real game with a tray and marble
