Antarctic Icebergs • Calving of major icebergs in the past – C-19 and B-15 in Ross Sea largest in recent years • C-19 left Ross Sea this year; B-15 A split • Weddell Sea icebergs regularly monitored • Larsen Ice Shelf Icebergs also now regularly monitored • New Ross Sea iceberg – B-26 June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003 -2004 Status Report Knuth, et. al
July 8, 2003 – Ross Sea In July 2003, there were six icebergs located in and near the Ross Sea. C-19 and it’s “children” were moving out of the Ross Sea toward the iceberg Graveyard (near Mertz Glacier) June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003 -2004 Status Report Knuth, et. al
July 18, 2003 – Ross Sea At this time, the C-19 bergs remain off the coast of Victoria Land, approaching the iceberg graveyard. Sea ice is present in the Ross Sea near Mc. Murdo Sound. The first hint of a crack can be seen in B-15 A, where B-15 J will eventually form. June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003 -2004 Status Report Knuth, et. al

July 24, 2003 – Ross Sea The increase of sea ice between B-15 A and the Drygalski Ice Tongue becomes more apparent through July. June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003 -2004 Status Report Knuth, et. al

Current Status • Larsen Ice Shelf icebergs remain near ice shelf – not much change • Monitor A-22 A for possible breakoffs • B-15 A undergoing major movements • B-15 J also rotating June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003 -2004 Status Report Knuth, et. al
Future Movements • B-15 A might move between Franklin Island shallow areas • Or could continue eastward along ice shelf • B-15 J could also continue rotating eastward • Not really sure June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003 -2004 Status Report Knuth, et. al
