WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ANNOTATE A TEXT? ØAnnotation (creating meaningful notes) ensures that we actively read a text rather than passively allowing words to bounce off of our faces. ØRead with a pen, pencil, and/or sticky notes in hand, marking important passages. Make notes in the margins. ØCommunicate with the text; bring its ideas to life. Annotation allows us to mark important passages and reminds us of our reactions to the texts.

WHY SHOULD WE ANNOTATE A TEXT? ØHelps us to capture main ideas / key concepts / details of a reading ØTarget the needed information from a text ØStrengthen your reading comprehension

WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED TO ANNOTATE? Ø Your reading material ØA pencil in your hand ØYour ACPO annotation symbols ØNO HIGHLIGHTERS! Annotating is not about highlighting the passage!

MAKING ANNOTATIONS As you work with your text, consider all of the ways that you can connect with what you are reading. Here are some suggestions that will help you with your annotations:

MAKE CONNECTIONS §Make connections to other texts you have read or seen, including: o. Movies o. Comic books/graphic novels o. News events o. Other books, stories, plays, songs, or poems §Draw a picture when a visual connection is appropriate.

USE YOUR OWN WORDS! §Re-write, paraphrase, or summarize a particularly difficult passage or moment. §Describe a new perspective you may now have. §Offer an analysis or interpretation of what is happening in the text.

=THIS IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Make sure to annotate with purpose! ØIf you are focusing on plot development of the novel, important information would include exposition, rising actions, climax, falling action, resolution, conflict, etc… ØIf you are focusing on the figures of speech of a poem, important information may include similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration, etc…
