Timeline and the Visual Arts I am not an artist, although I come from a family that creates beautiful art in gardens, carpentry and painting. Art has taught me about the difference between being and doing and to pause and examine my history and the historical context of a given piece. For me, visual art is one of the most vivid ways to learn about history and to tie together disparate experiences of being human. I hope you, too, enjoy the journey through English Reformations with these telling works of art.
Early Christianity in England Date Events Visual Arts 596 Augustine is sent by Gregory the Great to convert Britain's Anglo. Saxons to Christianity. 7 th Century: Sutton Hoo ship burial reveals intricate metal work. 604 Death of Gregory the Great. Tomb of Gregory the Great, St. Paul’s in Rome
Early Christianity in England Dat e Events Visual Arts 664 The Synod of Whitby was held at St. Hilda’s monastery and established the Roman practice for calculating the date of Easter. 500– 600: Arch with Running Vines, Leaves, and Fruit, (Byzantine). Believed to be from the Monastery of Apa Apolloin in Egypt. 673 Bede is born into a noble family in England. Late 500’s-mid-700’s: Ampulla of Saint Menas. Flask used to carry water or oil from the great pilgrimage site St. Menas.
Early Christianity in England Dat e Events Visual Arts 731 Bede completes the Ecclesiastical History of the English People when he was 59. 704: Lindesfarne Gospels produced in Northumberland demonstrated a new style of Insular art.
Henrichian Reformation Dat e Events Visual Arts 150 9 Accession of Henry VIII. 1506: Albrecht Durer: Painter, printmaker, & mathematician from Nuremberg creates Jesus Among the Scribes. 151 7 German theologian Martin Luther protests against the Roman Catholic Church’s use of indulgences 1517: Andrea del Sarto: Highly regarded Florentine artist finishes his Renaissance masterpiece
Henrichian Reformation Dat e Events Visual Arts 151 7 The first version of The Book of Common Prayer is completed by Thomas Cranmer. It included liturgical services of worship for the Church of England. 1508– 12: Standing Bishop, Hans von Reutlingen (Aachen, Germany) 153 3 Henry VIII marries Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth I is born. Henry is excommunicated from the Catholic Church and he becomes the leader of the Church of England. 1533: Trained in the Venetian School, the Italian artist Titian paints the portrait of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor.

Rise of Methodism Date Events Visual Arts 1689 The Act of Toleration allowed nonconformists their own places of worship if they accepted certain oaths of allegiance. 1640: Rembrandt paints portrait of an Amsterdam ebony worker, Herman Doomer. 1703 John Wesley is born in Epworth and was the fifteenth child of Susanna and Samuel Wesley. 1700: French artist Nicolas Fouche paints Pomona.

The rise of Methodism begins. 1730– 90: Queen Anne side chair made in Boston, MA; exported to colonies along Atlantic coast. 174 3 Charles Wesley writes the hymn “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. ” 1743: English painter and social critic, William Hogarth, paints a series of works commenting on marital ethics: Marriage a la Mode.
Rise of Methodism Dat e Events Visual Arts 174 6 Wesley publishes first volume of sermons. His sermons focused on such doctrines as prevenient grace and Christian perfection. 1745: The Yew Tree Ball by Charles-Nicolas Cochin. Engraving of the marriage of Louis XV's son was celebrated with a masqued ball held at Versailles.

The precarious relationship between Church and state set the stage for the Oxford Movement. 1789: The Triumph of Aemilius Paulus by Antoine Charles Horace depicts the victory over King Perseus 183 3 “Tracts for the Times” first published by John Hentry Newman. Sought to restore Catholic 1830: French Romantic painter Eugene Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People signifies the end of the Age of Enlightenment.
Oxford Movement Date Events Visual Arts 1834 Edward Pusey, a follower of the Caroline Divines and the prereformation Church, joins the Movement. 1834: Rue Transnonain, April 15, 1834, Honoré Daumier 1845 Newman converts to Roman Catholicism; Pusey assumes leadership of Tractarians. 1844: British painter J. M. W. Turner expresses the new means of transportation in Rain, Steam, and Speed.
