What is an Annotated Bibliography? • An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents where each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 100 to 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation.
Purpose of an Annotated Bibliography • The purpose of the annotated bibliography is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, location, and quality of the sources cited.

Components of an Annotated Bibliography Citation • The citation is the actual reference to the source of where a specific piece of information was obtained. • Citations MUST be in MLA format. • Example: Mc. Pherson, James. Battle Cry of Freedom. New York: Oxford University Press, 1988. Print.
Components of an Annotated Bibliography Summary • A few sentences summarizing the source. • Questions to be answered include: • What was the source about? • What was the main point of the source? • Should be an objective description of the source. • Example: Mc. Pherson, James. Battle Cry of Freedom. New York: Oxford University Press, 1988. Print. This book is a detailed chronicle of the history of the American Civil War. It covers not only the Civil War itself, but also provides an in depth exploration into the ante-bellum period that proceeded the war. The main point of the book is that the Civil War was a conflict that threatened the very fabric of the American state, and that there were complex factors that contributed to this long and bloody struggle.

It covers not only the Civil War itself, but also provides an in depth exploration into the ante-bellum period that proceeded the war. The main point of the book is that the Civil War was a conflict that threatened the very fabric of the American state, and that there were complex factors that contributed to this long and bloody struggle. This book was quite helpful to my subject, as it answered many of the factual questions I had about the origins of the Civil War and the complex web of factors that plunged the country into a long 4 year bloody struggle.
