Biography: Annibale Carracci was born in Bologna, Italy, on November 3, 1560, into a family of painters. In 1582, Annibale, along with his brother Agostino and his cousin Lodovico, founded the “Accademia dei Desiderosi”, which later became known as the “Accademia degli Incamminati”, where numerous artists studied, including those who formed the great school of Bolognese Baroque painting of the seventeenth century. At first his style was inclined to Maneirism, but the Accademy converted him to Ecletism, which could inspire dramacity and strength like no other follower of the school. In many of the first works in Bologna, it is difficult to distinguish between the individual contributions of each Carracci. In 1585, Annibale concluded the altarpiece of the “Baptism of Christ” for the church of San Gregorio, in Bologna. In 1587, he painted “The Assumption” for the church of San Rocco, in Reggio Emilia. They continued to work closely until 1595, when Annibale, who was the greatest artist of the family, was summoned to Rome by the Cardinal Odoardo Farnese to perform his masterpiece, the decoration of the Farnese Gallery, in the palace of the Cardinal family. Carracci was incredibly ecletic in thematic, painting landscapes , genre scenes and portraits, including a series of self-portraits through time. In his last years, Annibale was overtaken by melancholy and gave up painting almost completely after 1606. He died in Rome, on July 15, 1609. His anatomic studies were recorded after his death and had been used for nearly two centuries as a didatic material. Pietà with St Francis and Mary Magdalene, 1607 - Musée du Louvre, Paris, France
